Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin Shelley was born on this day (August 30) 1797.

She was an English novelist who wrote the Gothic novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus (1818). She also edited and promoted the works of her husband, the Romantic poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley. Her father was the political philosopher William Godwin, and her mother was the philosopher and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft.

She famously conceived the idea for Frakenstein, when staying with Lord Byron in Geneva, in 1816. She was also an essayist, biographer and dramatist, in addition to being an inventor of science fiction.
