The strongest earthquake – at 6.4 magnitude – in two decades hit California and parts of Nevada yesterday (July 4, 2019), causing injuries and damage in locations around the epicenter and was followed by aftershocks.
It struck around 10:30 am in the Mojave Desert (240 km northeast of Los Angeles), very close to Ridgecrest, California. Cracks were found on several roads, however there was no damage to over and underpasses. According to seismologists, the last strong earthquake – at 7.1 magnitude – occurred in the area on October 16, 1999. Such events are quite normal in the area and the long-term average is once everey 5 to 10 years in Southern California seismologists say.
